History of Waubaushene Elementary School:
- The first school in Waubaushene was built in 1872 on Hazel Street. Miss Irene Perkins was Waubaushene’s first school teacher.
- In 1889, a second school was built to accommodate the senior classes.
- In 1906, when the Catholic Church was rebuilt on Pine Street, the Public School purchased the old church building for the primary grades.
- Before the bridge was built in our community, the children from Duck Bay walked across the ice in winter, or came by boat (except in late fall and early spring).
- After World War I, the senior classes started attending high school in Midland. The primary building was no longer needed. – The old church building was then sold to the Oddfellows (a local community group).
- The school that was built in 1889, burnt to the ground in 1936.
- In 1937, a modern brick school was erected which still stands in Waubaushene today.
- In 1964, the original school house was torn down and two rooms were added to the brick building.
- A gymnasium addition has since been added to the school.
